For some time now I have been in contact with Dr. Abbie Goldberg at Clark University. She is currently conducting a study, Transition to Adoptive Parent Project (TAPP). They are seeking people who are becoming parents for the first time through adoption. My husband and I are participating. There are not many studies out there about adoption that are studying the adoptive parents. I am intruiged and believe it is important work.
Whether we recognize it or not, we as adoptive parents, represent an alternative type of family, Clark Univeristy is commited to "challenging convention and changing our world." By participating in this study I believe we are doing our part to help change perceptions in our society.
A survey and a telephone interview are conducted before you get your child and then they follow up with you after placement. Since placement is often so far away for some, like us, they will probably check in with us after a year. More people are needed so if you interested in participating please contact Dr. Goldberg at agoldberg@clarku.edu. You can tell her that Karin from garden variety family.com sent you.
My husband had a snow day yesterday, lucky for us, our interviewer was available so we were able to complete the pre-adoption portion of the study with our unexpected free time. It just makes me feel good that I can help bring scientific awareness to our side of the adoption triad.
By the evening we decided to go grocery shopping. The trip from the car to the store, felt like we were being put through a flash freezer. When we finished our shopping these cool crystal formations developed on the inside of our windsheild. So with numb fingers I fumbled to get this picture,--cool, huh?
