I have an anonymous connection to the current events at Sanlu and Fonterra. While this information is not substantiated by a named industry official it does appear to be information of interest and authority to this anonymous source. Since this is my journal of the time while waiting for my daughter this is something I have decided to document. While this story is rather negative it is another example of how the countries and the people of our world are connected and because we are so associated and we have a responsibility to each other. Whether is is through war, economy, trade, adoption, travel, geography, education, the internet we are connected interdependent and more alike than we are different. I think it is high time that we all the "wes" of the world start working together and feel a responsibility to each other rather than pointing fingers and trying to take advantage of each other. Pollyannistic I know, but wouldn't we all gain greater advantage if we took care of eachother and tried lifting each other up? Over 53,000 babies are sick, babies for goodess sakes, the most innocent and the future for all of us.
Here is a roughly translated apology from SanLu. Their website is currently shut down, the apology appears in lieu of the website.
Below are two separate communication I received from a commenter on my last post.
My knowledge on the subject, is this:
Sanlu, the Chinese corporation is partnered with Fonterra, a New Zealand milk production company. Fonterra is the biggest in NZ, and one of the largest suppliers for the country. They also provide milk products for countries all over the world - from the middle east, to the pacific islands.
Fonterra is but one of many small partners within Sanlu. Sanlu is wholey responsible for their own milk production, and is therefore wholey responsible for the contamination. Fonterra has been pulled into this, because they found out about it several weeks before everyone else did. Several people in Fonterra spent over a week trying to convince Sanlu to pull the products from the shelf. They wouldn't. So Fonterra reported them to the NZ government, who in turn reported them to the Chinese government. Without NZ's intervention, there is a chance that Sanlu would still not have come forward, nor pulled their products from the shelves.
Whether or not partial responsibilty will fall on the shoulders of some of the Fonterra officials who ended up reporting Sanlu is yet unknown.
It is in my opinion that the only people responsible for this mess are those within Sanlu who would not report the contamination, nor pull the products from the shelves. These deaths are on their heads.
I can also inform you of something that is about to hit the news stands in New Zealand - While Sanlu is responsible for the contamination, it seems the Fonterra will be fronting up with money - whether this is to pay fines or compensation is unclear at this time.
Also, fresh off the press:
The Food Safety Authority has found high levels of melamine in Chinese sweets sold in New Zealand .
It began testing for the industrial chemical in White Rabbit Creamy Candy yesterday, after reports from Singapore suggested the sweets could be contaminated.
FSA Deputy Chief Executive Sandra Daly says it has been time consuming to test the sticky milk-based lollies because equipment is designed to test liquids and powders. She says they have now received confirmation the candy does contain high levels of melamine.
Ms Daly says they have issued a Director-General's statement advising people not to eat the candy, but there are no immediate plans to recall the product.
Of course I was slow getting to my email and this is added a bit after the fact, but it is here for my reference, dismay and hope that a wrong will be set right.
